  18. You can change a user's password to one that is already used. (See
  19. "Steps to Reproduce Behavior," below.)
  20.  
  21. CAUSE
  22. =====
  23.  
  24. The Password Uniqueness feature allows administrators to force users
  25. to change passwords regularly and not to use the same password over
  26. and over. It is up to the administrator to decide how to use Password
  27. Uniqueness and when to override it and reset a user's password.
  28.  
  29. A user's password history is not remembered when Password Uniqueness
  30. is set. By design, password history does not apply when an
  31. administrator is setting a user's password--only when users are
  32. changing their own passwords.
  33.  
  34. (Under LAN Manager 2.x, you can do the same thing by changing the
  35. Password Uniqueness setting to zero, resetting the user's password,
  36. then returning Password Uniqueness to its previous value.)

  46. Steps to Reproduce Behavior
  47. ---------------------------

  49. 1. Start the Windows NT User Manager.
  50.  
  51. 2. In the Policies dialog box, choose Account.
  52.  
  53. 3. Set the Password Uniqueness value to a number such as 2.
  54.  
  55. 4. Close the dialog box.
  56.  
  57. 5. From the User menu, choose New User.
  58.  
  59. 6. In the Username box, type a username (for example, User1).
  60.  
  61. 7. Give User1 a password (for instance, Pass1). Close the dialog box.
  62.  
  63. 8. In the main user list, double-click User1. In the Password and
  64.    Confirm Password boxes, enter the same password you used in step 7.
  65.  
  66. 9. Close the dialog box.
  67.  
  68. Note that you changed the user's password to one that was already
  69. used.
  70.  
  71. NOTE: This behavior occurs in the Windows NT Advanced Server User
  72. Manager as well.
